From the day Superstorm Sandy ravaged our coastlines, my team and I were on the ground working for you. We haven’t stopped. In Congress, I fought hard to secure over $50 billion in emergency funding to support our rebuilding efforts. Now I continue to monitor the funding and direct it into the hands of the homeowners and business owners in Staten Island and Brooklyn who need it to fully recover.
When a federal policy prevented homeowners who turned down an SBA loan from qualifying for the full amount of grants, I stood up for my community and got the policy changed. I have introduced legislation to reduce skyrocketing flood insurance rates and continue to work with my colleagues to address this important issue. I worked to secure funding for Nichols Marina and to rebuild the ramp in time for boating season. And when the City continued to send water bills to homeowners of uninhabitable homes or failed to address the abandoned houses, I stood with you and called for action.
I had the honor to meet many of those devastated after the storm, and I could not be more proud to represent such an exceptional and resilient community. Our city has never seen this scale of devastation; yet we stayed strong, helped our neighbors, and together we are rebuilding back stronger and better than ever before.
